DOG BITES
Municipalities are usually responsible for dealing with the control of animals within their respective jurisdictions. If you or a loved one has been bitten by a dog, you have the right to bring legal action against the dog’s owner.
You can bring an action regardless of whether you were bitten because of the owners’ negligence or not. The injuries from dog bites will vary depending on the circumstances of the attack. They can range from minor scratches to permanent disabilities and can even include psychological harm. In the most serious cases, an application can be made to a court for an order to euthanize the owners’ dog.
The court can mandate other punishments as well, including ordering an owner to provide better control of the animal by ensuring that it is on a leash or muzzled, or ordering an owner to keep the dog within a specified area. It is also important to note that, in Ontario, there are specific bans on the breeding, importing, and/or transferring of pit bulls. Punishment for the above-mentioned offenses can range from a fine of up to $10,000 to up to 6 months in jail.
